Entertainment News: DeSantis + Disney and Award Season Is Here

Gov. Ron DeSantis has appointed a key figure in Florida’s “parental rights” movement to the board that will oversee Disney’s Orlando theme parks. DeSantis signed a bill on Monday that strips Disney of control over its special governing district and establishes a successor agency to handle zoning, fire service, infrastructure, and utilities at the parks and went on record saying, “The corporate kingdom finally comes to an end,” He has appointed five members to the board of his newly named Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. At the signing ceremony that was held Monday, DeSantis attacked Disney World, by accusing them of trying to inject a lot of this sexuality into the programming for kids. DeSantis said, “We want our kids to be kids., Those are not the values we want to promote in the state of Florida.”

And we are in the middle of awards season… the SAG Awards and the NAACP Image Awards just passed and not this Sunday, but next… March 12th, we have the Oscars coming up. And yet another award show to look out for is the 16th annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards, which recognizes Black women “making their undeniable mark in film and television and forging forward their own definition of what it means to be a Black woman in Hollywood,” Black Women in Hollywood began as a 400-person luncheon 16 years ago and has expanded into an “oasis of sisterhood and a safe space for Black women to fully

see, hear, and embrace one another.” The awards will be held on March 9th in L.A. and can be live-streamed on ESSENCE.com
