MONTGOMERY COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

A Prattville man has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of illegally possessing a firearm which he used to shoot and kill a pregnant cow.

Byron Jamar Esco, 30, was sentenced to just under five years in federal prison Thursday, according to U.S. Attorney Louis Franklin, Sr.

The incident happened on Nov. 29, 2017, not long after Esco had been released from a state prison.

Prosecutors said Esco driving along a county road in Hope Hull when, unprovoked, he pointed a 9-millimeter handgun at the cow as it grazed on grass.

After killing the animal Esco drove away, but not before the cow's owner saw his vehicle and reported the shooting to law enforcement.

A sheriff's deputy found Esco's vehicle the next day. Inside was the gun the convict used in the shooting.

Esco later pleaded guilty after a grand jury charged him with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

When he was sentenced, Esco also got an enhancement for possessing the gun in furtherance of another felony, killing cattle livestock. That's a violation of Alabama law.
