A 99-year-old veteran who lived through imprisonment by the Nazis in World War II is returning home after beating COVID-19 in the hospital.
Albert Chambers, a former British Army soldier, was wounded in battle and held in a Nazi prison camp for three years during WWII.
On Friday, hospital workers applauded Chambers as they sent him home following his victory over COVID-19.
"There's nothing I can say," Chambers told a hospital worker. "Thank you very much and I appreciate every bit you've done for me. You couldn't have been better."
The New York Post reports that Chambers also served in the Coldstream Guards and once protected Buckingham Palace. He was initially hospitalized after falling at home. When he began to show respiratory symptoms, hospital officials tested him for the novel coronavirus and confirmed he was infected.
Chamber's grandson, Stephen Gater, says their family feared the worst when they learned of the COVID-19 diagnosis. But he thinks his grandfather's military "fortitude" was crucial to him beating the pandemic disease.
"He's pretty incredible," Gater said. "He's not only survived the war and being in prison camp, now he's won the battle with coronavirus."
