Georgia Woman Allegedly Conned Out of $80,000 By Man She Met on Dating Site

Georgia man allegedly cons woman out of $80,000

A whirlwind romance for a woman in Georgia turned into a nightmare after she learned she'd been conned out of more than $80,000 by a man she became engaged to a week after they met online, authorities said.

Gwinnett County Police say John Martin Hill, 35, and the victim met on Match.com on March 27 and decided to meet in person the same day. Hill told the victim that he was a millionaire and within a week, they had become engaged.

"During their short romance, he convinced her that they were in love and wanted to buy a house together. They went house-hunting and selected a home they were interested in. Within a week of knowing one another, they agreed to get married," police said in a statement about the incident.

The victim then handed Hill more than $80,000 that was supposed to go toward the purchase of a martial home and furniture they'd share together. But, the second she handed the money over, police say Hill cut off all contact with the victim.

Police say this isn't the first time Hill has taken advantage of women he met online. An investigation by the Gwinnett County's Electric and Financial Crimes Unit revealed that Hill previously lived in Duluth, Georgia with another woman and child and recently purchased a 2014 BMW, painted black. Hill has changed his name more than five times in the last two and a half years and is wanted in Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey for similar romance cons.

Gwinnett County police issued a felony warrant for Hill for theft by deception. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
