Man In Standoff With Police Refused To Surrender As His House Burned

A man from Princeton, Illinois barricaded himself inside his home with a woman after police were called because he allegedly pointed a gun at her. The man told officers he was armed with a long-range rifle and had explosives, forcing them to retreat. They set up a perimeter and began to negotiate with the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Erik Truedson.

Negotiators were able to convince Truedson to release the woman, who was unharmed, but he refused to surrender. After nearly eight hours, a fire broke out on the second floor of the home. Despite the fire, Truedson refused to come outside. Officials believe he started the fire intentionally.

Numerous fire trucks arrived on the scene, but firefighters were not able to start putting out the growing blaze because they were worried that Truedson might start shooting. Eventually, he came outside to surrender but resisted as officers tried to take him into custody. He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Once Truedson was in custody, the firefighters began putting the flames out.
