The rapper says she struggled with her decision when asked to perform at this years Super Bowl LIII . Although the rapper reportedly received a lucrative offer, her choice to support ex-NFL player Colin Kaepernick outweighed any price.
Cardi told The Associated Press that the decision was a tough one considering her husband, Offset from the popular rap group Migos , is a huge fan of the sport.
âMy husband, he loves football. His kids play football. Itâs really hard for him. ... He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he canât go to the Super Bowl, because heâs got to stand for something,â said Cardi who shares a baby daughter with the rapper.
âYou have to sacrifice that,â she added. âI got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But thereâs a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.â
Other artist including Rihanna , Jay-Z and P!nk have also turned down offers to perform the Super Bowl halftime show in support of Kaepernick. In a single off of his joint album with wife, BeyoncĂ© , APESHIT (The Carters) , âI said no to the Superbowl, you need me, I don't need you. Every night we in the endzone, tell the NFL we in stadiums too.â
Many have given Cardi criticism for still partaking in Super Bowl related events, but she believes her work would not conflict with showing support for the NFL.
âI hear people saying like âOh, yâall are saying all this stuff about the Super Bowl, but youâre doing all these parties,ââ Cardi said. âAnd itâs like, well, if the NFL could benefit off from us, then Iâm going to benefit off yâall. Yâall make the most money off our people. Why am I not going to take advantage of yâall and take money from yâall too? Because of yâall, we are getting these parties. OK, thank you.â
âWhen they see (how) the choices they made due to racism has affected the country, thatâs when things are going to start changing. Right now, they donât want to accept that their decision has affected the country,â Cardi added.
