Student Helped Stop School Shooting After Overhearing Classmates' Plan

Vermont officials are praising a middle school student who told the principal at Middlebury Union Middle School that two classmates were discussing a plan to shoot another student over the weekend. The principal immediately called the police, who launched an investigation.

Officials said that the students planned to steal guns from a relative and bring them to school at noon on December 18th to shoot one of their classmates. Police used an Extreme Risk Order to seize multiple guns from the child's relative on Monday.

The students were removed from class and taken to juvenile court to face charges for their plan. Authorities did not release their names or the name of the child who made the report because they are all minors. One of the students was taken to Porter Medical Center where they were given a psychiatric evaluation.

"Everybody sort of did what we'd hope they'd do," Addison Central School District Board Chairman Peter Conlon said according to WNDU. "A student heard something and found a trusted adult and told that adult, who alerted authorities, and authorities worked hard and did what they were supposed to do."
