Researchers Say Water Likely Lies Below The Surface Of The Moon

Researchers say the moon's interior could contain large amounts of water.  A team from Brown University examined satellite data of lunar rock formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.  There are trace amounts of water carried by magma to the moon's surface and the scientists think it's probable there's water still inside.

They also speculate that the water could have been deposited by comets and asteroids while the moon was still cooling following its separation from Earth.  The findings could be useful in future human activity on the moon, since water is heavy and expensive to transport into space.  The study was published Monday in the journal "Nature Geoscience."
